Configure IM

As a client or user of Aguila's Jabber server you will require a username and password. Run as a private server, Aguila's Jabber server does not support automatic registration. Clients or users who have not yet obtained a username and password should email technical@aguila.com.

  • Step 1 — download and install Gaim onto your desktop / laptop computer
  • Step 2 — setup your Jabber account using Gaim, and login
  • Step 3 — add a buddy, and chat.

Gaim — Jabber account setup


Your username will be of the form screen_name@domain_name, identical to your email address — e.g., jgreen@sampledomain.dom.

  • Select the Jabber protocol
  • Enter your Screen Name — e.g., jgreen
  • Enter your domain name as the Server Name — e.g., sampledomain.com
  • Leave the Resource: Gaim
  • (optional) Enter an Alias — e.g., Joe
  • Check both Remember password and Auto-login
  • Choose Select more options
  • Check both Use TLS if available and Force old SSL
  • Enter Port: 5224
  • Enter Connect server: 216.187.119.140
  • Leave the Proxy type: Use Global Proxy Settings


To first contact another IM user you must add the person to your buddy list. In the Buddy List window choose Buddies / Add Buddy from the menu.

  • Enter the person's screen name — e.g., swhite@sampledomain.com. Note: include the domain name — e.g., sampledomain.com
  • Enter your Screen Name — e.g., swhite
  • (optional) Enter an Alias — e.g., Susan
  • Leave the Group: Buddies
  • Leave the Account: — e.g., jgreen@sampledomain.com/Gaim (Jabber)
  • Click the Add button.
You should see the new buddy entry in the Buddy List window. The buddy will be prompted to authorize your request. Once done then you will be able to send messages to the person. Note — your new buddy will have to send an authorization request to you before the person can send messages to you.
